How to install NEWSTAR

Installation files

  • install full set

• Linux binary (Red Hat Enterprise2.6, CentOS2.6, Fedora9)

Installation

1. Required environments.
   • FORTRAN and C compilers (if you make NEWSTAR from source files)
   • openMotif 2.3/2.3.1 (Fedora 9 etc. ; see http://www.openmotif.org)
   • Length of username (typically /home/xxxxx) is restricted to less than 7 characters.
   • Login shell is C shell.
2. Make a directory for NEWSTAR. (2. through 7. are to be done as root)
   • Please make a directory in a file system larger than 500Mbytes (1Gbytes if you install both versions 1999 and 1993). Here we assume /home/newstar for example
3. Extract tar archive.
   • Extract the tar archive of NEWSTAR.

                     % cd /home/newstar
                     % tar xvf tarfile .

     In the case of installation of binary files, steps 4. to 6. (compilation) are not necessary.
4. Verify environment variables setting file.
   • Change to the installation directory (/home/newstar/install), and verify the environment variables in the setting file. Edit it with an editor if necessary.
     • setLINUX : CentOS2.6 etc.
     • setLINUXFC4 : FedoraCore 4
5. Set the installation environment.
   • Set environment variables with "source" command.

                     % cd /home/newstar/install
                     % source setLINUX 

6. Start installation
   • Run the shell "ALL"

                     % cd /home/newstar/install
                     % ALL 

   • After numerous messages appear, the installation finish. It takes a while; one or several hours in the worst case.
   • If you do not see any error messages (the form of "Error:****"), installation is successful. (You can ignore warning messages of compilation and linking)
   • If you use other versions, Specify the version in the environment variable "VER", and run "ALL" again.

                     % setenv VER 31DEC08
                     % ALL

7. Prepare your personal environment.
   • Check the shell for personal environment (/home/newstar/exe/nadmintool).

     Open the above file with your editor, check the setting of USERHOME, and modify it if necessary. Your personal home directory for NEWSTAR will be $USERHOME/your-account (Typically, $USERHOME is /home, but not always).

   • Edit the server list file (/home/newstar/exe/cpulist).
   • Open the file with your editor, and describe the server name (host name, like almampu, not like almampu.mtk.nao.ac.jp) and the newstar home directory (e.g. /home/newstar) by separating with a brank in the file.
8. Make your personal environment
   IMPORTANT!!! Do the followings in your account (NOT as root).
   • Register your project name.
   • check the file /home/newstar/exe/hnuidtab has write permission
   • Run "nadmintool"

                     % cd /home/newstar/exe
                     % nadmintool & 

     You have a small window.
   • Choose "Add user" in the menu.
   • Entries are Group (account), Project, AIPS ID from the top. Here Group means your account. Project is arbitrary within seven characthers. AIPSID should be 1, if you do not have special reasons (e.g. you made blind copy of another AIPS/NewStar environment with AIPSID other than 1).
   • Select "APPLY". If you get your project name, the it is OK.
   • Under $USERHOME/account(group)/project/, you have
     • DA01:data directory (in AIPS, its logical name is DA01:)
     • DA00: system file directory
     • rexe:@AIPS startup shell directory
   • Run NEWSTAR

                     % cd /home/newstar/exe
                     % newstar

Update NEWSTAR

1. Extract difference file

                   -- for source --
                   % cd /home/newstar
                   % pwd
                   % /home/newstar
                   % gunzip newstar-update081106.tar.gz
                   % tar xvf newstar-update081106.tar
                   
                   -- for binary version --
                   % cd /home/newstar
                   % pwd
                   % /home/newstar
                   % gunzip newstarbin-update081106.tar.gz
                   % tar xvf newstarbin-update081106.tar
       

2. Run update shell

                   -- for source --
                   % ns081106.sh
                   
                   -- for binary version --
                   % nsb081106.sh
       

3. Compile (only for source)

                   -- for source --
                   % cd install
                   % source setLINUX 
                   % ALL
        

Fedora 9 and openmotif

Default installation of Fedora 9 will not contain openmotif. You will need to install it if you attempt to compile the NEWSTAR from its source code.

Download version 2.3.1 rpm and install from web site below.
